FAQs

At least once a day, Lynndi Lauper and Doctor nln ask each other this question. But it's really code for 'share your workout plan'. And if there is no workout plan, the convo gets even more supercharged as it turns to special topics like injuries, therapies, out of town guests, extensive travel requirements of the gig, or exhaustion. And the other most FAQ is "What are you eating for dinner?" Doctor nln and Lynndi have so much combined knowledge that blogging it was inevitable.

Witness as we beat ourselves up with hideous workout plans and then gorge on lemon heads and sugar free ice cream.

Lynndi Lauper...where are you???

I know the fit and fabulous Lynndi Lauper has been working out, because I have seen her at the gym. She was on the elliptical and then she disappeared. But then she reappeared on the bench at the gym doing a hundred triceps dips.

However, from this blog she has been MIA.

I have been kept up with my goal of 8 mile runs every Saturday in February. As God has a terrific sense of humor (and makes the weather 55 degrees and sunny on days when I have no opportunity to run outside but drops the temp to less than 20 with greater than 20mph winds on my day off) I did my 8 miles on the treadmill. It wasn't bad, but I would prefer to be outside. Next months kicks off 10 miles every Saturday. I REALLY hope the weather improves because 10 miles on the treadmill sounds more like a sentence than an opportunity...

Tomorrow is ABC with the Renegades. I hope that Lynndi will be amongst the Renegades. I also hope the little ninja children (and for that matter, the stinky ninja adults) don't have something going on the smaller studio at the gym or else we will be working out in the hallway!

What am I NOT doing?

Whew!
it has already been a tremendously busy day and it's only 4:15pm!!

Today's workout was an 8.5 mile run at 6:30 am. I really only meant to do 8 miles but by the time I turned the corner to head back to my house it was 8.41 miles. I couldn't end there but I didn't really feel like rounding out the full mile, so the half mile seemed like a good compromise! After that I cleaned the house, did the laundry, had brunch with the fabulous Lynndi Lauper and some of her fellow Brats, went to a birthday party for a 7 year old, folded the aforementioned laundry and put it away and now I am heading out to buy groceries!

Tomorrow I will do NOTHING!!!!!!

I Know You've Worked Out Since Thursday

I didn't do anything Friday or Saturday, but I had a nice run outside yesterday, probably 4.5 miles and that's all.
Tonight I saw you, and that's how I know for sure you worked out, even though all I really saw was you walking on a treadmill and not even all that sweaty.

I did 2 miles at a good pace on the treadmill and then 100 of the following, except for the pikes, which I stopped at 65, and the abs which I did 25 extra in order not to be lopsided:
Pushups - some wimpy
frogs on thé ball
pikes on the ball
supermans on the ball
abs - 25 on the ball/feet on the wall, 50 in Captain's Chair, 25 each side on the ball
bicep curls, half with military press
squat jumps
tricep - some dips, some overhead

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself...

and maybe also Peg!

You should have no fear of coming back to ABC, or HITT or whatever the hell they call it this season! You, the Queen of 100s (as I will now be referring to you), who can stand to do the elliptical for hours on end. And by the way, let me point out how impressed I was seeing you on the elliptical today. you were COMPLETELY in the zone. I wish I could lose myself on the elliptical like that. I usually watch the clock ticking down at a snail's pace praying for the torture to end.

That said, today I ran 6 miles. It wasn't a bad run but it wasn't great either. It took me a little longer than usual to hit my stride, but once I did, I felt pretty good!

I hope that you will make an appearance at HIIT this week!

I Know You Went to HIIT

But I stayed home and did the Spartacus workout!
I did the whole thing and didn't throw up, but to make it last an hour, I did 100s of almost all the exercises in it.
And now it's dinner time.

"And I ran..."

I am going to blog about yesterday first...

I decided that rather than falling back into my usual routine of 6 mile runs during the week, I would try to change up my runs and make myself faster/stronger. I have experimented with increasing my speed on the treadmill to 7.5mph and for some runs this has been great! Yesterday I also threw in hill work on the treadmill. I did a four mile warm up, then 4 x 1 min hills (increasing from an incline of 1 to 4 with each hill) and then a 1 mile cool down. That last mile about near killed me and the hills made me want to vomit (I did not actually vomit, I am proud to say). It was a TOUGH run but I did it!

Today I did HITT where one of the participants in class said "I miss Lynn." You need to come visit us on Wednesday afternoon now and then Lynndi.

But the really BIG NEWS for today is...I AM GOING TO SEE MADONNA IN CONCERT when she plays in Chicago!!!!!!

Tuesday Night Report

I ran 1.6 miles from house to car, and when we got to the gym, I tolerated the elliptical for about 20 minutes. I saw you running like a maniac!!

Then we both went to Thom's awesome abs class.

Doctor, Dear Doctor

As you know, I took Friday and Saturday off from working out in favor of reclining in prep for the gigs those nights. Reclining really does pay off, huh?

But Sunday before your awesome Superbowl party, I ran outside in the SUNLIGHT for four miles. There was no wind, and I had my podcasts to move me along: it's a novel I'm listening to by a Canadian author whose voice reminds me of my Canadian brother, so I pretend he's reading to me... not sure why that keeps me running, but it works. When I got back home, I did 100 pushups and 150 (various) abs. The pushups included 25 pike and 25 decline, with some coaching from an elementary school student who seemed very very unimpressed with my performance. Later, Jesse van Halen dared me to do one pushup with perfect form.

Tonight's workout was kinda the same. I was torn between going to the gym or using the gear at home and focusing on Men's Health exercises. Due to extreme credit card activity and the trauma which followed, I opted for the gym. Just two miles on the treadmill and then:
150 ab crunches (various); 100 overhead triceps, frogs on the ball, dumbbell single arm rows, squat jumps, prisoner (lunge) jumps, squat to dumbbell curl to overhead press; 50 bench press on the ball, chest flyes on the ball, skull crushers on the ball. I think I'm forgetting one of the 100s... I did not do pushups tonight, due to Jesse Van Halen's dare.

I wish Josh of Seagulls would tell us about his workouts because I have a feeling they're terrifying!

It's time for an increase!

So I told myself that in February, I would increase my Saturday morning runs to 8 miles. The plan is to then increase again in March to 10 miles every Saturday. In April I will get in at least one 12 miler and then I will be ready for the 1/2 marathon at the end of April.

Today was the first Saturday in February. I was primed by the lovely weather we had all week--sunny and 50-60's. It would be my release from the treadmill! I would have to wear my big vest because I need the zippered pockets to hold my pager and cell phone (I am still Dr. nln, after all). My run had to wait till after clinic, during which time I tried tirelessly to convince Miss Lynndi to join me on my run (while still managing to see 14 patients over 3 hours). I finished clinic at noon and headed outside...where it was less than 30 degrees, 18 mph winds and raining! WTF?? Where did the sun and warmth go? And why does it always disappear on the weekends when I might actually have a chance to enjoy it??

I decided the hell with running outside. I DID get my 8 mile run in, on the treadmill. And at a faster pace than I usually run, so I guess that was a good thing. I didn't do anything else because tomorrow is Renegade ABC and I plan to make it one worthy of Superbowl Sunday!

As I type this, the last batch of chocolate chip cookies are coming out of the oven (making necessary the aforementioned Superbowl-worthy workout)!!

My Secret Wednesday Activities...

Couldn't make it to the gym in time for that terrifying class.
Didn't get started early enough to go for a run outside, even though that was my favorite idea.
The garage is full of things right now, so it's useless as a solo gym.
The room with the full weight set and bench was being used for some musical activity (GASP), so I couldn't really use that either.

I took some dumbbells into the living room, cleared the furniture, closed the doors, cranked the stereo, and did a bunch of Men's Health exercises. There's a boot camp routine in the current issue; although it's supposed to take no longer than 21 minutes, I wasn't really watching the clock for 60 second intervals but was counting reps instead, and apparently they take a lot longer than one second each, so I dragged that out for about 35 minutes. Then I found some kettleball things and various squat and lunge jumps and extra pushups to fill the next 20 minutes. It was a very nice workout, with lots of strength stuff, and I managed 100 ab crunches and 100 pushups within these routines.

And then things got really fun!

Happy Wednesday to you!

Today was ABC day. Wait, now they are calling it "HITT." So today was HITT day. It was a tough workout. I am not enjoying the new fitness trend of exhausting one muscle group then moving on to the next. To me, it seems like a really good way to incur an injury. And trust me, not only because I'm a doctor but also because I have spent A LOT of time and money on the physical therapy table, I know injuries!!!

Suffice it to say, my quads are exhausted! But it was a good workout and now I am sitting on the couch watching The Biggest Loser while I eat my latest tofu concoction and sip a glass of wine.

I was hoping the lovely Lynndi Lauper would make an appearance at HITT but she had more important things to do...I wonder if she will post them on the blog?
